Joan & Tim Block

Joan and Tim Block, along with Paul and Janine Witte, established the Foundation in 1991. The couple resides in Doylestown PA and first met in Philadelphia, when Joan was a nurse at a major hospital and Tim was a faculty member at Thomas Jefferson University. They recently were honored with a major new award for advocacy by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, as reported here.

Baruch S Blumberg

Baruch S. Blumberg, MD, D.Phil., won the Nobel Prize in 1976. He had immense curiosity and energy which lead to the hallmarks of his scientific persona. Described as a leading light in the scientific community and a great humanitarian, Dr. Blumberg identified the hepatitis B virus and created the first vaccine to prevent infection with the virus.

Susana Lorenzo-Giguere

Susana Lorenzo-Giguere, JD, was honored by the Foundation in 2020 Community Commitment Award for her outstanding work at the U.S. Department of Justice, litigating cases of discrimination against people living with hepatitis B.

THIS YEAR'S AWARD WINNERS

Baruch S. Blumberg Prize

Wenhui Li, PhD

Wenhui Li, PhD, National Institute of Biological Sciences in Beijing, has been chosen for the 2021 Baruch S. Blumberg Prize for his outstanding contributions to hepatitis B research. The award will be presented during The Foundation’s Annual Crystal Ball Gala event taking place virtually on Friday, April 30.

Community Commitment Award

Nadine Shiroma

During the Foundation’s Annual Crystal Ball Gala event on Friday, April 30, Nadine Shiroma, Policy Advisor for The Hepatitis B Foundation, will be awarded the Community Commitment Award for her initiatives to educate and spread resource awareness to help eliminate HBV.

Milestone Achievement Award

Carol & Edmund Blake Foundation

Carol & Edmund Blake Foundation will be awarded the Milestone Achievement Award for their extremely generous support. Eric Freedgood will be accepting this award on behalf of the Carol & Edmund Blake Foundation, which has contributed more than $1 million to the Foundation, during the Foundation’s Annual Crystal Ball Gala event on Friday, April 30.
